The noblewomen of Ancient China during the Ming Dynasty wore very long artificial nails to indicate their nobility and it serves as a proof too that they did not have to do manual labor like a commoner. While in Greece, upper class women wore empty pistachio shells over their nails. It was in the early 19th century and this artificial nail trend in Greece slowly spread through out the rest of European countries which often described the social status of women who wore them.

Today’s generation often call them fashion nails or nail extensions. It is commonly called artificial nails or fake nails. Nail extensions tends to imitate the real look of a fingernail. They are often mistaken as real fingernails unless the attached designs looks too good to be true. Artificial nails are mostly made from different kinds of materials. But the first artificial nail was invented by Fred Slack in 1954. While doing his job as a dentist, he accidentally broke his fingernail and this made him create a realistic-looking temporary replacement for his fingernail. He perfected his invention after going through several experiments. Together with his brother Tom, they patented the invention and started a company that sells the first fake nails. th century.
